The Community Free Clinic ~ Concord, North Carolina

Founded in 1994 by physicians David Lockhart and George Liles

  ~ Our Mission ~

The Community Free Clinic strives to make a positive difference in the lives of Cabarrus County residents by providing medical care, emergency dental care and medication to low-income residents at no charge. The Clinic is a collaborative effort among volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, social workers, lab technicians, the United Way and NorthEast Medical Center.

Retired physicians Dr. George Liles and Dr. David Lockhart founded the Community Free Clinic in 1994 in an effort to meet the needs of the uninsured in Cabarrus County. Since then, the Clinic has outgrown 3 locations and is presently located at 528 A Lake Concord Road. The Clinic began with the Night Clinic Program two nights a week. No fees are charged for services. Currently a Night Clinic is held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, a Chronic Care Clinic is held on Thursday afternoons and a Pharmacy Service is administered for individuals participating in the Community Care Plan. For details on each program, please view our Programs page.

The Community Free Clinic became a United Way Agency in 1998 and meets the standard criteria of a 501c(3) organization. The successful operation of the clinic depends largely on volunteers and community donations.

A Community Partnership

The Community Free Clinic is a successful health care organization thanks to the leverage received through community collaboration. The entire medical community plays an active role in providing high quality care to our patients. The Clinic relies on volunteer medical professionals and pharmacists. NorthEast Medical Center provides inpatient care and diagnostic services. LabCorp provides all lab testing and analysis at no charge. When specialty care is needed, the Clinic is supported by area physician specialists who continue care for our patients in their offices without charge. In addition, there are countless hours provided by administrative volunteers and contributions of needed supplies. Local restaurants and vendors provide meals for volunteers during the Night Clinic Program. Support also comes from churches, civic groups, and businesses that recognize the need for such a collaborative, common sense approach to a serious community problem.

Community Collaboration

The Community Free Clinic partners with a variety of local people and organizations in order to provide critical medical services.

What It Takes...

Dr. David Lockhart and Dr. George Liles were driven by a clear understanding of the health care needs of our community. Together they continue to provide inspiration and leadership to hundreds of volunteers who are the backbone of the Clinic. In 2003 alone, more than 365 people contributed over 5,640 hours of service. There is a place for everyone at The Community Free Clinic. Please visit our Volunteers page for a description of the different volunteer opportunities. Our patients will benefit from your donation of time and talent. Financial assistance is needed to buy medications and equipment for the patients, support general operations, and purchase needed medical supplies.

Support for the Community Free Clinic has come from many sources through the years. United Way of Central Carolinas, The Cannon Foundation, The Duke Endowment, Kate B. Reynolds Foundation, and the Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina all have believed in the positive work being done by the Community Free Clinic.

2004 Income Sources 2009 Vision

In order to provide long-term financial stability to The Community Free Clinic, our Board of Directors has adopted the goal of reducing our dependence on private grants and United Way funds. We know that our vision for the future is a challenge, but we believe in the importance of our mission.
